Residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean assist passengers on an overcrowded sloop. The boat had just arrived from Haiti carrying 139 people. UNHCR / 25 February 2011
*** Local Caption *** The recent arrival of a boat carrying 139 Haitians at the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) in the Caribbean has given immigration officials there the opportunity to put into practice training they received from UNHCR.

The sloop carrying men, women and children, arrived in the capital Providenciales on February 25. The Haitians were taken by immigration officials to a detention center where they will remain while their cases are processed. TCI, an archipelago of forty islands and cays, and a British Overseas Territory, serves as both a destination and a gateway to North America for hundreds of migrants moving through the Caribbean. In 2010, it received four boats carrying a total of 321 Haitians. The first boat in 2011 arrived on January 3 carrying 127 Haitians.
